The General Authority of Customs (GAC) has established a specialized unit for government agency procedures under its Sport Events Management System to simplify taking approvals for shipments as part of its effort to improve customs services in advance of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

In a tweet, GAC stated that during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, “The Sports Events Management System will help facilitate the entry and exit of commodities to and from all custom check stations of Qatar.”

This is part of a massive plan by the authority to upgrade its electronic system and facilities to facilitate the growing number of tourists and trade expected during the World Cup.

GAC had earlier announced the launch of a special programme to simplify custom procedures for major sports events in the country, notably the forthcoming World Cup.

The programme aims at simplifying customs procedures through a single-window system for those seeking services from Qatar and abroad, in coordination with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and the Organizing Committee for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

According to the latest statistics issued by the authority, the number of released customs declarations reached 272,660 in July, 2022. A total of 276 seizure reports were recorded during the month.

The users of single window system ‘Al Nadeeb’ reached 2,558 in July. The Customer service centre recorded 861 transactions.

The plan for customs duties related to the World Cup is fully ready, a GAC official had said.

“A work plan for matters related to customs duties has been developed, at a rate of 100%, for the 2022 World Cup,” said Ajab Mansour Alqahtani, Director of Customs Administration at Hamad International Airport (HIA) in the latest Newsletter of the GAC.

Talking about the most prominent preparations for HIA customs and efforts made to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods during the World Cup, he said: “A plan has been drawn up to change the work system at the time of the tournament and to provide the appropriate numbers of employees for the time of the tournament.”

He said the HIA Customs Operations department is concerned with finalising the procedures of customs goods that are received with travellers and collecting customs duties thereon, in addition to seizing prohibited and restricted goods and keeping them in customs warehouses.
