Spaniard walking to Qatar for World Cup goes missing
With January of this year, Santiago Sánchez Cogedor, a Spanish national, set out on an epic adventure from Madrid to Doha in the hopes of making it to Qatar in time for the FIFA World Cup 2022 opening ceremony on November 20. However, Santiago Sánchez Cogedor vanished after commencing his journey.
Since October 2, Cogedor has reportedly been silent to his loved ones, friends, and hundreds of Instagram followers.
On October 1, he posted pictures from the last village in northern Iraq, where he was blogging at the time, showing a day spent playing football with nearby kids and being invited to eat with a family.
According to reports, he last shared a picture of himself near the Iraqi Kurdistan border with Iran, which is assumed to be the place where he went missing.
One of his closest friends and a spokesman for the family told the media that he shared his location every day with his group of closest friends and the last message shared was on October 2 at 12:30 Spain time.
Cogedor started walking from Alcala de Henares to Qatar on January 8 and frequently updated his social media profiles with videos and photos.
His other close friend, Miguel Bergado, told El Mundo that he might have been kept by the police as a foreigner because of the political unrest in Iran.
According to reports, the Spanish Embassy in Iran is working with local law enforcement to discover the former paratrooper.
