South African floods kill at least 18 people

On Tuesday, local authorities in South Africa’s eastern coast announced that at least eighteen people had perished in flooding brought on by intense rain.

A spokesman for the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, which was severely affected by the floods, told AFP that at least seven people had perished in the Eastern Cape province.

Additionally, the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal, a neighboring state, reported that at least 11 individuals had passed away in and around Durban, a port city.

Nelson Mandela Bay has seen the evacuation of almost 2,000 persons, many of them from improvised dwellings in the municipality’s slum areas.

An request for blankets, food, and clothing contributions was made by the local authorities.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial officials issued an alert.

55 people with minor to moderate injuries are receiving hospital care, according to a provincial government statement.

 

“At least 120 people have been displaced and three temporary shelters have been established,” said the statement.

The worst flooding South Africa has ever experienced occurred in 2022 in Durban and the surrounding area, causing mudslides that claimed the lives of over 400 people.

On Monday night, rescue personnel were sent to the two affected provinces.

Homes were flattened, roads flooded and trees felled.

Some places suffered energy blackouts.

According to the national meteorological agency, South Africa is currently experiencing a “cut off low” pressure system that is characterized by intense rains and a cold snap that may also bring severe winds, hail, and snow.

The eastern Indian Ocean coast has experienced heavy rains, and four of the nine provinces in southern Africa have received weather advisories from meteorological authorities.
