Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra to perform ‘World Cup Music’ concert on Wednesday

Two “World Cup Music” performances by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will take place on December 7, 2022, at Corniche.

The two parts of this unusual outdoor concert will run from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Together with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, the event will take place (SC).

QPO’s musicians will perform a selection of football’s greatest hits such as: Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” Queen’s “We Are the Champions”, and “Hayya Hayya (Better Together),” among others.

“Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” is the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was held in South Africa. “We Are the Champions” has become an anthem for victories at sporting events, and served as the official theme song for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. And “Hayya Hayya (Better Together)” is among the 2022 FIFA World Cup official soundtrack.

In a statement, QPO said that through these celebrations, the orchestra which is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), is supporting QF in achieving its goals of fostering social participation and promoting the history and culture of Qatar and the Arab region.

Tomorrow’s concert will be led by internationally sought-after conductor, Johannes Vogel. He has received praise from all around the world for his groundbreaking approach to classical music masterpieces. Vogel is a producer and composer for cinema and television. His recent works include MGM/Paramount production “Hercules” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak.”

The performance will be held at Corniche, Doha – Central Stage, located close to The NED Hotel and near Al Bidda underpass.

QPO Executive Director, Kurt Meister earlier revealed that the orchestra will perform open-air concerts across Doha including today’s performance. He said the concerts’ themes will include well-known football songs from throughout the world, Gulf folk music, Arab-themed music, as well as compositions that have been orchestrated by the Philharmonic. “We have made arrangements for famous songs and also the most famous football songs from different countries.”

Moreover, QPO Deputy Executive Director, Nasser Sahim said in an recent interview that a similar concert which was held in August entitled “Gulf folk meets Philharmonic” will be performed during the World Cup. This is for fans and guests to provide them an opportunity to enjoy and experience “traditional folk music in orchestration style.”
