Qatar increases aid to Sudan with USD 25 million pledge

On April 15, 2024, the State of Qatar declared a fresh commitment of USD 25 million to aid the brotherly Sudan in fulfillment of its obligation to its giving citizens. This raises the total amount it has allotted to USD 75 million since the country’s crisis began. This is on top of the contributions made by its civic institutions, which total more than USD 11 million to date and are represented by the Qatar Red Crescent Society and Qatar Charity.

This was mentioned in the State of Qatar’s speech before the Paris Conference on Sudan, which was held in the French Republic on April 15, 2024, by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater.

Her Excellency emphasized that the conference is taking place at a critical juncture, as the brotherly Sudan and its kindhearted people are going through one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of our time. This is because the country’s massive displacement crisis—caused by the ongoing military conflict—is currently the biggest in the world. She pointed out that the proportion of pupils not enrolled in school is at an all-time high globally, not to mention the horrors, fatalities, and acute shortages of food and medication those kind people are facing.

Her Excellency emphasized how critical it is to help bring the Sudan problem back to the international agenda and reposition it as a top priority for the international community.

Her Excellency stated that the State of Qatar would want to highlight a number of significant ideas that would serve as the cornerstones of any global strategy addressing the Sudanese issue in this regard. Preserving Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and institutions is the fundamental principle, she clarified. She emphasized that the second priority is to serve the interests of the Sudanese people, who are brothers and sisters. This involves preserving their blood, reestablishing their security in their country, meeting their basic needs, and striving to realize their justifiable goals in their homeland.

According to her, the third principle is to put an end to any outside interference that was involved in lighting the crisis’ fuse in the first place and is still doing so in order to keep flames from going out rather than putting them out.

Her Excellency felt that the only way to resolve the Sudanese crisis would be to help the country’s institutions and the brotherly Sudanese people establish the necessary conditions for them to be able to live in their homeland with dignity, rather than continuing the current state of affairs under any pretext and merely providing support to refugees in neighboring countries. This would amount to the international community both directly and indirectly contributing to the status quo and turning Sudanese society into a society of refugees

According to Her Excellency, they are aware of how complicated the situation is and how challenging it is to get help and do fieldwork in different parts of Sudan. However, they have also seen a notable improvement in their reach into numerous locations. Since the first shock that prevented them from moving at the start of the fight in April of last year, Sudan’s pertinent institutions—the Ministry of Health, the Red Crescent, and others—have performed much better. She went on to say that they can now confidently state that these organizations are able to work with nations and international organizations to secure the delivery of help and supply facilities.

Her Excellency noted that since the start of the conflict, significant and admirable political initiatives have been made with the goal of containing the situation and resolving the Sudanese crisis peacefully. Examples of these initiatives include the African Union’s active efforts and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah process. She emphasized that the State of Qatar supports these regionally initiated activities, anticipates stepping up their efforts in the near future, and believes they will be successful in the end.

The State of Qatar, in collaboration with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Federal Republic of Germany, organized a donors’ conference in Geneva in May, resulting in the announcement of pledges totaling approximately USD 1.6 billion, according to H.E., Minister of State for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She stated that the State of Qatar hopes that all donor nations will honor their previous commitments in addition to the new ones made at the meeting today.
