NDLEA Intercepts Qatar-Bound Illicit Drugs Concealed in African Salad, Dried Vegetables
Chidinma Agbazue, 35, has been taken into custody by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) agents after they discovered that she was trying to send 20 packages of 10.7 kg of cannabis sativa—commonly known as “Abacha”—to Doha, Qatar, via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Chidinma, an outbound passenger on Qatar Airways from Lagos to Doha, was intercepted last Thursday by NDLEA officers at the Lagos airport working in conjunction with men of the Department of State Security (DSS), according to a statement released on Sunday by the anti-narcotics agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi. The incident occurred during passenger clearance at the screening point of terminal 11 of the MMIA.
According to his initial inquiry, Chidinma was based in Qatar but traveled back to Nigeria in December of last year for the Christmas season. She claimed that before leaving for her trip back to Doha, she slept at the Club Dice Hotel in the Ikotun neighborhood of Lagos, where she received the shipment that was intended for trafficking to the Arab nation.
According to Babafemi, on Tuesday, NDLEA agents detained Monday Okeke and Chigozie Emeka in the Oniwaya, Yaba, and Agege areas of Lagos. During their detention, the agents found 842,560 opioid pills, primarily tramadol, along with 15 liters of codeine syrup and 596 grams of Molly.
According to him, Okeke’s effort to bribe the NDLEA operatives with N5 million in cash was unsuccessful, and the money was recorded as exhibits used in the suspects’ court case.
Three suspects in Bayelsa State, Ebuka Eze, 31, Ugochukwu Okoro, 44, and Kingsley Uzim, 27, attempted to smuggle opioids, including codeine, molly, tramadol, and diazepam, totaling 73.425 kilogrammes, to the creeks in the Southern Ijaw area of the state last Wednesday. NDLEA agents stopped them at Swali jetty, Yenagoa, where they arrested Ebuka and Ugochukwu, and in a follow-up operation, Uzim was apprehended at Amasoma.
He disclosed that the drugs were transported to the jetty on a tricycle while hidden within large sacks.
Two suspects, Eniola Muyideen and Bankole Shuaib, were also taken into custody following a raid at Orile Imo, Ogun state, last Friday, along with 137 blocks of cannabis totaling 71 kilogrammes.
Agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Taraba State seized 39,980 tramadol tablets from a suspect named Abubakar Mohammed, 33, in Lankaviri village, and Apaji Vincent, 29, who was detained in Wukari last Thursday together with 131 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.
Nwachukwu Chinedu, 28, was most recently taken into custody by NDLEA agents in the Isikwuato local government area of Akara Ahuba, Abia state. 46.65 kilograms of cannabis, various amounts of tramadol, methamphetamine, and rohypnol, and N71,500 in cash were found on him.
In the Ondo State, a Volkswagen Vento saloon car bearing the license plate NTT 215 AA was found to contain at least 127.5 kg of cannabis. Meanwhile, 400 bottles of codeine syrup were found in the Sabon Gari area of Kano, and Chinasa Christopher, a 30-year-old female suspect, was taken into custody. In a follow-up operation last Tuesday, Bakura Goni, the owner of a shipment of illegal substances that were intercepted along the Zaria-Kano road, was detained at Lagos’ Mile 2 Market and transported to Kano to face charges. The 73.8-kilogram shipment of cannabis and tramadol that was being transported from Lagos to Kano was previously intercepted.
At least 3,065.255 kilogrammes of the same psychoactive substance were destroyed on two farms at Amahor Waterside Forest in the Igueben area of the state, where three suspects—James Thankgod, Wisdom James, and Akpa Festus—were arrested last Thursday. In Edo State, 278 kilogrammes of cannabis headed to Idoani in Ondo state were recovered during a raid at Oloma-Okpe forest, Akoko-Edo local government area.
Babafemi disclosed that within the last week, NDLEA commanders nationwide stepped up their advocacy lectures for the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA).
Meanwhile, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd), praised their counterparts across the nation for stepping up their WADA advocacy lectures while also praising the officers and men of the MMIA, Lagos, Edo, Ogun, Kano, Abia, Bayelsa, Ondo, and Taraba commands of the agency for their balanced efforts in the previous week.
