Mexico confirm forward Corona will miss World Cup due to injury
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced on Tuesday that Mexico winger Jesus “Tecatito” Corona will miss the World Cup after failing to recuperate from an ankle injury.
In August, Corona, who has 10 goals in 71 appearances for Mexico, fractured his left ankle while working out with Sevilla. Corona needed surgery as a result.
After Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli stated that the 29-year-old would not be ready for the finals, Mexico coach Gerardo Martino, who included Corona in his 31-man preliminary squad for Qatar, traveled to Seville earlier this month to assess Corona’s health.
The Mexican medical staff were hopeful “Tecatito” could join Mexico’s training camp on Nov. 14 or 15 despite the LaLiga club saying he would only return in December.
The player will not be able to be incorporated into the Mexico team for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, according to the appropriate correspondence between Gerardo Martino and Jesus Manuel Corona, FMF said in a statement.
His recovery from the injury he sustained in August of this year is still ongoing.
Raul Jimenez, a striker who was injured in the groin in September, is another important player that Martino is keeping an eye on.
Mexico’s final two exhibition games are against Iraq on Wednesday and Sweden on November 16, with their World Cup campaign beginning against Poland on November 22. In Group C, they will also compete against Saudi Arabia and Argentina.
