GECF hosts landmark workshop in honour of Africa Day celebration
At its Secretariat in Doha, State of Qatar, the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) organized a workshop titled “Natural Gas for Africa” in honor of the Organization of African Unity’s 61st anniversary of foundation.
The GECF Secretary General, Mohammed Hamel, presided over the event. H E Ghulam Hoosein Asmal, the President of the African Group of Ambassadors and Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, and H E Sheikh Mishal bin Jabor Al Thani, the GECF Chairperson of the Executive Board for 2024, co-chaired it. At the function were honorary ambassadors and delegates from the GECF member nations of Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Angola, Iraq, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mozambique, Peru, and Algeria.
Prominent speakers addressing policy, technology, and finance offered their perspectives on the benefits and drawbacks of natural gas in Africa at the GECF, African Energy Commission, International Gas Union, African Energy Chamber, African Finance Corporation, and Rystad Energy.
Mohammed Hamel stressed in his opening remarks that the event was a celebration of Africa’s accomplishments and an opportunity to consider the continent’s issues as well as its rich history and many cultures, particularly in the energy sector.
In his introductory speech, H E Ghulam Hoosein Asmal emphasized how natural gas may help Africa move faster toward sustainable development, while H E Sheikh Mishal bin Jabor Al Thani emphasized how natural gas can promote regional cooperation and integration in Africa. After the session, speakers emphasized the need of boosting acceptance and investment in the continent’s enormous natural gas reserves in order to combat energy poverty in Africa and advance environmental protection and sustainable development goals. The talks emphasized how important it is to have unrestricted access to cleaner technologies, increase the amount of local content in projects, develop human capital, and flow of financial resources.
The ambassadors thanked the GECF for the initiative, emphasized the value of the workshop, and demanded that it continue in order to foster deeper cooperation between African nations and other regions.
The workshop is scheduled to take place every year in conjunction with Africa Day.
