Education ministry to provide healthy meals to students at nominal prices
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has reaffirmed its commitment to offering affordable, nutrient-dense meals in school canteens that adhere to healthy standards.
The Ministry provided a list of food items in school canteens for the academic year 2022-2023 in a circular circulated to public school principals, stressing that it will provide free lunches in these canteens everyday for select pupils.
According to the Ministry, suppliers are required to provide meals in accordance with the nominal prices that have been approved as well as the necessary nutritional standards and guidelines for the State of Qatar, based on the food items that must be served daily, so two items from each group are available each day, in addition to food items served once a week. Additionally, certain items that are forbidden must not be offered in school canteens.
The ministry stated that the food menu in school canteens must offer a thorough description of each of the three listed daily, weekly, and forbidden food items, with a focus on the necessity of adhering to the necessary nutritional criteria required for each category in canteens.
In a comparable context, the ministry noted that only pupils attending preparatory and secondary schools receive a selection of special foods, soups, and hot beverages.
