CONMEBOL backs FIFA in setting controversies aside before Qatar 2022
The South American Game Confederation (CONMEBOL) backed FIFA’s message that the World Cup in Qatar should be focused on the football and said that, with the competition beginning in two weeks, it is now time for “disagreements to take a back seat.”
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, stated that the sport shouldn’t get involved in “ideological or political disputes,” and CONMEBOL has endorsed this position despite calls from European countries for FIFA to take action to protect the rights of migrant workers.
“The CONMEBOL and its ten Member Associations calls on the football world to support the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” CONMEBOL said in a statement yesterday.
“This message (of sport) is powerful because it is universal, it goes far beyond political or ideological disputes, temporary disagreements and occasional confrontations.
“The time has come for disagreements and fights to take a back seat, let the games begin for all citizens (to) enjoy an all-embracing celebration, so eagerly awaited by our planet.”
