The Al Janoub stadium which is the very first Qatar venue to be constructed from scratch, is located in Al Wakrah. As a tribute to Al Wakrah’s seafaring past, the stadium’s design is inspired by the sails of traditional dhow boats. It is built with an inventive cooling system and a roof that is retractable making the venue suitable for use, all year round and in all seasons.
The stadium which was designed by AECOM and Zaha Hadid Architects was inaugurated on 16th May 2019 (when it hosted the 47th Amir Cup final) and has the capacity to contain 40,000 seats.
Al Janoub staged several matches during the 2020 AFC Champions League, including the final on 19 December 2020. The stadium hosted six matches up to the quarter-finals stage in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021.
In Qatar 2022: Al Janoub will stage four matches with African team in the round of 32 stage
