AFC President urges global football family to unite behind Qatar 2022
With less than two weeks to the commencement of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), reaffirmed the AFC’s support for the remarkable efforts made by the State of Qatar.
Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa asked the entire football family to stand united behind this sports event in a message that was posted on the AFC website on Saturday.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be an exceptional success that will be remembered for all time thanks to the tremendous efforts of the State of Qatar, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the Qatar Football Association, FIFA, and all stakeholders, the AFC President emphasized.
“Now more than ever, it is crucial for all of us to wholeheartedly complement their efforts by offering our full support to the tournament in order to help football realize its true potential and build bridges of solidarity and peace through the beautiful game,” remarked Sheikh Salman.
“No other sport has the unique power to bring us all together in a positive spirit of joy, excitement and optimism, and there is no other competition better positioned than the FIFA World Cup to send out a resoundingly inclusive message of goodwill and peace in these difficult times,” added Sheikh Salman.
The AFC President emphasized the importance of delivering a successful competition. “A successful FIFA World Cup in Qatar is the need of the hour as it is the pathway to foster and promote understanding and solidarity, and it is my sincere hope that in these challenging times, we will not be distracted from appreciating the great joy football, as a unifying force for good, is capable of bringing us,” he said.
The AFC promises its complete support and unshakable commitment to a successful FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and stands in solidarity with the State of Qatar, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the Qatar Football Association, and FIFA, Sheikh Salman said.
A record six Asian teams will compete in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and there will be a record 19 Asian match officials. The grand final is scheduled for December 18 at the Lusail Stadium, with the opening match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador taking place on November 20 at the Al Bayt Stadium.
After the Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup in 2002, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 will mark just the second occasion an Asian nation will serve as the host nation.
