UN calls on Sudan’s conflicting parties to abide by ceasefire

The warring parties were urged by the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan to respect an instant ceasefire, stop attacking civilians, and guarantee unhindered humanitarian access to millions of people in need.

This was said in a press statement that was released as the nation’s conflict was about to enter its second year.

Since hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces began on April 15, 2023, hundreds of civilians have died, according to the UN.

Approximately two million people have fled to nearby nations, leaving over six million internally displaced. Eighteen million people have severe food insecurity, and about 24 million people require aid.

According to the fact-finding mission experts, the parties involved in the conflict in Sudan have not complied with the Security Council’s request in Resolution No. 2724 for an immediate cessation of hostilities during the month of Ramadan, as well as a commitment to an all-encompassing peace process.

The experts on the mission also urged UN members to use their power to persuade the opposing factions to put an end to hostilities and swiftly establish democracy, justice, and peace in Sudan.
