Qatar supports ICRC operations in South Sudan
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) have entered into a grant agreement to support the ICRC’s relief efforts for individuals escaping the conflict in Sudan and seeking safety or resettlement in South Sudan. The money for this initiative comes from the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).
The primary focus of aid is on assisting South Sudanese returnees and Sudanese refugees in reestablishing or maintaining touch with their families, as well as facilitating their access to basic necessities including food, clean water to drink, household goods, and medical care.
Basma Tabaja, Head of the ICRC Delegation in Qatar, said, “The signing of this agreement signifies the vital efforts made by ICRC, QFFD, and QRCS to support humanitarian action worldwide.”
Acting Secretary-General of QRCS Faisal Mohamed Al Emadi emphasized the significance of providing for the fundamental necessities of those who have been internally displaced from Sudan into South Sudan. “This agreement is a component of QRCS’s ongoing humanitarian efforts for marginalized communities in Sudan and many other nations, which would not have been feasible without the support of our partners and donors, principally QFFD,” he stated.
In the months since the turmoil in Sudan began in April 2023, more than 600,000 people have fled into South Sudan. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been working to address the critical needs of refugees and returnees by offering phone call services to reunite families that have been split up, as well as food and nonfood items (NFIs) and supplies for water purification.
In order to address the changing humanitarian needs of populations affected by war, the joint venture with QRCS and QFFD expands on strategic discussions between the ICRC and the Government of Qatar. These discussions center on enhancing collaboration in areas of common interest.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Qatar is greatly appreciated for playing a crucial position in facilitating this strategic alliance. We will work to increase humanitarian assistance for the millions of people suffering from the effects of conflict in collaboration with QFFD and QRCS,” Tabaja said in closing.
