Human trafficking awareness campaign launched at airport
In collaboration with Hamad International Airport (HIA) and the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), the Ministry of Labour, represented by the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, has started a campaign inside the airport building to raise awareness of human trafficking issues and has announced a hotline dedicated to reporting abuses and violations regarding these issues.
The introduction of this awareness campaign was made as part of the Ministry of Labour’s initiatives to increase public understanding of the need to combat human trafficking and its effects on society, in line with QNV 2030 and the state’s commitment to human rights.
The Ministry launched at the beginning of 2022 a hotline to receive complaints about abuses related to cases and crimes of human trafficking by calling the number 16,044, or emailing at [email protected].
Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs and Secretary of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking, Mohammed Hassan Al Obaidli, stressed on this occasion that this campaign comes within the framework of Qatar’s keenness to combat human trafficking crimes, raise awareness and publicise the role of the committee, and work to prevent human trafficking during and after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, in cooperation with the management of HIA and NHRC.
Secretary-General of NHRC, Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, stressed the importance of the campaign to combat human trafficking and its role in spreading and raising societal awareness and preventive work to avoid cases of human trafficking, especially since Qatar will host in less than two months millions of official delegations and fans and those wishing to participate in the World Cup.
According to him, NHRC continues to support the state’s initiatives, as represented by the relevant authorities, to advance a human rights-based strategy for battling human trafficking. Saeed Yousef Al Sulaiti, vice president of security of HIA, stated that one of the airport’s top goals is the safety and security of travelers. He further stated that HIA collaborates with the NHRC and the Ministry of Labor in raising awareness of the fight against human trafficking. In order to stop occurrences of human trafficking, he emphasized that HIA’s responsibility requires promoting and raising awareness among tourists.
