Ghana Captain Andre Ayew Set Sights on Breaking the Country’s Trophy Drought By Winning AFCON or World Cup
Before ending his Black Stars career, Andre Ayew stated that he wanted to help the senior national side win the World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana will travel to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup under the 32-year-old Al Sadd forward.
Ayew has stated his goal to win the competition as his time playing for Ghana is running out.
“To be honest, I don’t have any personal goals for myself. Since I joined the Black Stars, my only personal goal has been to help the team win a title, Ayew told the Graphic Sports.
“That’s my only target and I’ve been close a number of times (the 2010 AFCON and 2015 AFCON final). “I won the Under-20 AFCON and won the Under-20 World Cup trophies, but my only target is to win a trophy in the Black Stars jersey, any trophy that I can win — AFCON or the World Cup trophy. That’s my goal, that’s my aim and that’s what I pray and work hard for every day.”
When the Black Stars won the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations with Andre Pele’s father Abedi Pele on the team, Ghana last won a significant trophy. Three times, the Black Stars came within one penalty kick of winning the championship, losing in 1992 and 2015. In the 2010 championship game, they also fell to Egypt 1-0.
