Qatar stresses necessity to reach political solution to Syrian crisis

The State of Qatar emphasized the need for a political resolution to the Syrian crisis that is in line with the Geneva 1 Declaration and Security Council Resolution 2254, as well as the aspirations of the Syrian people.

This was stated by Qatar in a statement made before the 51st regular session of the Human Rights Council during the interactive discussion on the Independent Commission of Inquiry into the Syrian Arab Republic by HE Dr. Hend bint Abdalrahman Al Muftah, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

The Permanent Representative expressed deep concern about the continuation of violence and violations and abuses against human rights in Syria, particularly the Commission’s report on insecurity in the areas under the control of the government and the continued practices of arbitrary detention, torture, ill-treatment, enforced disappearance and extortion against Syrians returning to their areas; the confiscation of homes and property and the launching of indiscriminate attacks that kill civilians, children and deliberately target civilian facilities, and the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions, most notably for children and women, in displacement camps, especially in northern Syria.

Al Muftah stressed that unveiling the fate of tens of thousands of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons, particularly in the prisons of the Syrian regime, is a fundamental issue related to many humanitarian and legal issues, and should not be subject to negotiation or blackmail. She also reiterated Qatar’s support for the call of the UN Secretary-General to set up a body that discloses the fate and whereabouts of those missing and forcibly disappeared and provides all needed requirements to enable it to perform its mandate.

Her Excellency called on the international community to take further measures to ensure the protection of the Syrian people, end impunity, hold all those responsible for violations and crimes committed in Syria accountable, and bring them to international criminal justice.
