Qatar slams suicide attack targeting Russian embassy in Afghanistan
At least six people were killed in a horrific bombing that occurred on Monday in the Afghan capital close to the entrance of the Russian mission. Qatar has condemned the attack.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Doha “strongly condemned and denounced the bombing that took place outside the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Afghan capital, Kabul, which led to deaths, including Russian diplomats, and multiple wounded.”
As one of the foundations of the international system, the ministry “emphasized the significance of providing the essential protection for all diplomatic missions and their workers.”
Two embassy employees were killed in the unusual attack on a foreign diplomatic presence in Kabul, according to the Russian foreign ministry.
Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, a “unknown insurgent” detonated an explosive device close to the consular section of the embassy in the Darul Aman neighborhood to the southwest of Kabul.
Two members of the diplomatic mission were killed as a result of the incident, and Afghan citizens were also hurt, according to the Russian ministry.
A police chief told Reuters that guards at the entry recognized the suicide attacker and fired their weapons.
A member of the Islamic State militant group reportedly “blew up his suicide vest in a meeting attended by Russian personnel” close to the embassy, according to a written Telegram statement.
The incident has been condemned worldwide, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing his condolences to the victims and their families.
In another tweet, the UN mission in Afghanistan urged “the de facto authorities to take action to safeguard the safety and security of the people as well as diplomatic missions.”
Following a swift offensive after the withdrawal of US and other troops last year, the ruling Taliban group took control of Afghanistan and threatened to take action.
The spokesman for the Taliban foreign ministry, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, declared in a statement that “[the government] has a close relationship with Russia; we will never let such bad activities of enemies have a detrimental impact on the relationship.”
