HIA’s aircraft traffic and number of passengers increase in July
According to a statement made yesterday by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), passenger and aircraft traffic at Hamad International Airport (HIA) increased in July of this year.
Comparing July of this year to July of 2021, air traffic increased by 29.9%. According to QCAA’s study, there were 14,485 flights in July 2021 and 18,811 in July 2022.
During the same time frame, the number of passengers increased by 94.3 percent. In July of previous year, there were 1,781,753 passengers, whereas there were 3,642,594 last month.
The modest growth is more evidence of the recovery in aviation traffic’s forward momentum.
According to HIA, the passenger traffic volumes during the second quarter of the year increased by an astonishing 18% when compared to the first quarter. In comparison to the first quarter, the passenger transfer percentage increased from May to June 2022 by 16% while outward local passenger numbers increased by 47%. Similarly, the number of inbound travelers climbed by 7% from the first quarter.
In the second quarter of 2022, HIA serviced 8.42 million passengers in total, including 2.5 million in April, 2.8 million in May, and 3.1 million in June.
The second quarter was the busiest quarter for the airport since 2020, according to a statement released by HIA early last week.
However, air freight and mail were down to 8.3 percent in July 2022, compared to the same month last year. In June 2022, the flow was also reduced to 197,724, compared to 217,212 in June 2021.
The Hamad International Airport is getting ready to receive thousands of fans from around the world less than three months before Qatar hosts the FIFA World Cup 2022.
After the airport’s phase A extension, it will be able to accommodate 58 million people, and its phase B expansion, which will start in early 2023, would further increase the airport’s capacity to serve over 60 million passengers.
More than 1.5 million people are anticipated to attend the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
HIA and Doha International Airport will be operating at full capacity to accommodate more than 16,000 spectators and football enthusiasts each day during the quadrennial tournament.
During the tournament, Doha International Airport will handle between 5,000 and 6,000 football fans per day, while HIA will handle between 8,000 and 10,000.
