After 44 years of narrating the FIFA World Cup, Enrique Bermudez of Mexico will hang up the microphone.
After the World Cup in Qatar, El Perro, as he is affectionately referred to by football supporters, will retire, handing the microphone to the following generation.
During the scoreless World Cup qualifying match between Mexico and the United States, the 72-year-old announcer made his retirement announcement.
In his emotional parting speech, Bermudez thanked his family and teammates for their support throughout his ten years on the microphone and said goodbye to his World Cup career.
“Qatar, which will be my 12th World Cup—I’ve participated in 11—will be the last one I mention. “I say goodbye to the World Cups since they are 44 years old,” the Mexican El Perro stated.
Beginning with the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, Bermudez voiced 11 World Cups steadily throughout the 1970s.
After beginning his career with Spanish media juggernaut Televisa, Bermudez rose to fame and lent his voice to seven Copa American and European Championships.
In addition, Bermudez has narrated four Confederations Cups, including four youth World Cups, and three Olympic games.
Outside of the fields, Bermudez has provided the voiceover for sports in FIFA’s video games, from FIFA 06 through FIFA 13.
In Qatar, Bermudez will undoubtedly receive cheers as he speaks aloud for the final time on the world stage.
Bermudez simply indicated that he will no longer be participating in the World Cup scenario; he will still commentate on other matches.
